I am thinking of moving to Hillside (mid) area. What are the pros and cons to living there? I am thinking abut things like (private well/septic, weather, wildlife encounters, accessibility to city, taxes, property values, etc.). Any help would be most appreciated.

I don't live there, but I have visited many times, and I would imagine that the roads get very slippery in the winter.

Longer winter, more snow, lack of snow plows on some of the roads.

I don't live up there either but I do hear quite often when we have a windy day that the gusts up on the hillside can reach over 75mph. The views are incredible.

Pros:

INCREDIBLE views, particularly the winter sunrises and sunsets.
Abundant wildlife in your own yard.
Lots of privacy.
Close access to Chugach trailheads.
During inversions in winter, can actually be warmer up on the hill than down in the bowl.
Safe neighborhoods.
Good Schools.

Cons:

High prices.
Huge property tax bills.
Snow comes a couple weeks earlier and lasts a couple weeks longer.
Studded tires a must.
Traffic on O’Malley and Abbott.
Chinook winds, particularly in winter can practically blow you off the hill.

IMO, the pros far outweigh the cons.

The views are incredible. The houses seem to be larger with good size yards. It feels like you're outside of Anchorage but everything is a short drive away.

But the winds are horrendous (up to 100 mph when a chinook blows through, winter is longer, and the side roads are all gravel. It's beyound beautiful as far as views are concerned. I take visitors up to Glen Alps to show them the view.

I suppose that the closer you live to Flat top, the more you have to put up with tourist traffic in the summer.

Yes, which is why I purposely stayed away from anything on Upper Huffman. This past summer we even started noticing several Princess Lines tour busses cruising around the hillside!

That has to be a scary view for the driver when going downhill. My thoughts were aligned along what the drive would be like on an icy road.
