My wife and I will be visiting for a week in January and have a few questions. I will be going through the first phase of testing for the Anchorage Police Department. This will take up much of my time I'm sure. I know january is not the greatest time to visit, but I need to do it now to get into the academy before it starts and I have to wait. First, what are some good things to do, and check out in or around town? As in, are there any special events happening at that time? Also, what are some of the "better" neighborhoods? What is a good hotel to stay at? What is the average temperature in early January. What are the driving conditions in town during the winter? This is just out of curiosity not fear, since we love snow sports. I'm sure i will think of more questions later. Thanks for now.

If you down hill ski or snowmachine you could drive down to Girdwood and hit the slopes, ride the tram, or rent a snowmachine for a day of fun. Or just take the drive south to Seward and see some great scenery.
January can be a 50/50 weather wise. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it snows, and sometimes it's just fairly cold. Hard to predict this early.
You should be able to get a room at any of the hotels in Anchorage in January. The Captain Cook is one of the more expensive one's but has great views of the city or the inlet, and some good dining. There are many in town that are cheaper and for the most part as nice accomodations...just less of a view.
