In Southcentral, Fall happens after the August rains stop and the sun arrives just in time to showcase all the wonderfull fall colors and the termination dust upon the Chugach. It can be two weeks or a good month or more. Best time of year here. Especially if the freezer and pantry is full of good stuff collected during the summer. Some years, it rains until it snows and appears to go from summer to winter overnight.

An update: Medical care in Alaska is approximately 35% higher for general practitioners (your family doc) and 80% for specialists. Shop carefully for your specialists and ask for written cost estimates before they treat you, otherwise you could end up with a really nasty surprise as they do not contract with insurance companies, which means they are not required to accept the payments insurance companies will cover. Also, keep an eye on your medical privacy and let your providers know you expect it to be respected.

Gas prices are significantly higher than they were when in 2009.

The last two summers we've had little sun and early rains. Last summer we enjoyed about three weeks of beautiful weather in late June-early July and then it was gone for the rest of the summer aside from a day here and there. This summer we had a three weeks or so solid stretch of sun in April, but not since.

It is mid-July and autumn chill is in the air. People living in the Chugach Mountains area reported termination dust already! Actually, they told me that two weeks ago, the beginning of July. Leaves on the trees in Anchorage were full and green for about a month, and now the birch leaves are already turning yellow and a few have dropped. It looks like we will have an early winter after breaking the snow record last winter.

Good luck all!

We had termination dust on Pioneer Peak in July this year and its up there again right now. Alaska is economizing so they've done away with spring and summer.
