What's the deal with the car rentals? I checked Budget and even with my Costco discount they want $820 for an economy car in June for 13 days. I would really like to visit the area and would need a rental car... Are the prices in Alaska skewed for rental cars? A Minivan is like $1,500 for 13 days.

KBS2006:
I was up in Anch last year. Arrived the end of April & got a rental for 2 weeks. It definitely wasn't what you're being quoted, but...... For what it's worth---if you use any of the travel planning websites, do not put in for your pickup point "ANC," the Anchorage Intl Airport (oops, Ted Stevens Intl.) Look for various locations downtown. There is a helluva surcharge (tax) for renting at the airport. I went with a rental place down on International Airport Road near the Old Seward Hiway. Got a cab over and it was fifteen bucks. When I came back, the guy from the car rental dropped me near the Peoplemover route, across from Gwennies resturant and I caught the bus on over to the Airport.
Good luck and enjoy your visit.

Oh no my friend, when you come during tourist season your gonna pay plenty for a rental car and a hotel room. Some of the rates will even triple compared to the off season. You might look at flying in to Fairbanks and renting a car there and driving down and around. Occasionally that will be a tiny bit cheaper.

Summer rates are nasty. I am currently renting cars for some of my guys at daily rental rates of $30-35/day for full-size (not SUV's or vans, but big cars). In three months, they'll be lucky if I get them a comapct, but usually it's a sub-compact.

I had to rent my SUV from Hertz & my travel agent had me pick it up at the airport. It was $1200 for a week with all of their BS insurance thrown in. Renting from downtown Anchorage is cheaper, but its a lot less in Wasilla. This is the place I'm going to check out next trip.

Well, I certainly appreciate all the responses, and yes, I guess it is true that the prices are skewed upwards for the tourist season. Which in my opinion is a shame since that definitely puts a damper on my plans of hiking and fishing and avoiding bears.

All the alternatives, like somehow getting to Wasilla (take a bus?... what if the plane arrives at 10 pm...), or flying into Fairbanks (how much more will that cost)... or taxi outside of the airport (what a hassle.. what a welcoming treat (sarcasm).. just to shave a little off the cost. I might not go now.

That's just how life is in Alaska during the summer tourist season. There are other alternatives. I'll have to look in the file and see what I can find. You could always try some of the off brand rental companies like Rent-A-Wreck, etc.

This is the one I was thinking of. My wife worked there when she was going to college. But be warned you need to make reservations now.
