ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Operators of Alaska’s largest ski resort are taking the rare step of billing a 19-year-old skier for the cost of rescuing him after he was badly hurt striking a tree in an off-limits area.

Ben Habecker, an assistant patrol director at Alyeska Ski Resort south of Anchorage, says it took 13 highly trained ski patrollers to rescue Matt Davis, who had fractured his left leg.

It's about time, he brought this upon himself. Can't offer any sympathy here.

This was at the bottom of the article....He also is banned from skiing on the mountain for a year.

ahhh...hello....if he broke his leg that bad he won't be skiing in a year anyway??!! I agree he should pay back the money spent to rescue him. As should be in any situation where the person willfully violates the warnings and becomes injured.

Yea, also from the ADN article:

and he must take a skier safety test before he can resume the sport there. He will be required to post letters of apology in the Anchorage Daily News and a biweekly local newspaper..
Ouch!!!

And while the article goes on to say that

Quote:
Davis had never been cited before. He has been seen skiing in closed areas but patrollers haven’t been able to catch up with him. Habecker said he’s warned Davis in the past...
the last line of the article quotes him as saying “I have a totally new perspective on closed areas,”. So at least it sounds like the kid is now taking responsibility for his actions.

Sounds like the resort may have saved his life both with the rescue & the aftermath.

If he injured himself at home and had to be taken to a hospital in an ambulance, he would be paying for that emergency service. Why would a mountain rescue be any different?

People who provide these services should be compensated for their work, regardless where an injury takes place. If Alyeska wants to pay for those rescue services out of their own pocket in certain areas, that is very generous of them, but it should not be taken for granted.

Although it could be they are required to provide rescue services on Alyeska property either as part of their lease agreement and/or their insurance contract, but yea, for off property the kid should be grateful that they didn't leave him out there as a snack for those pesky wolves everyone in the -48 seems to be so concerned about lately.
