A couple years ago after wrapping up a summer of fishing in Kodiak, I remember some fishing buddies and I went out to an area near Hope, drove up some rough logging (I think) roads, and camped out for a few days. They were both from AK, I was not.

Now in hindsight, I'm wondering if we should have had a permit for camping? We didn't use a campsite, it was just a spot we found off the road. It was later in the season (October). We only saw a few random hunters out there, this was definitely not a typical tourist camping site, very much roughing it, which is what real camping is if you ask me.

So, am I a criminal? Or are you free to camp and hike so long as you don't use an actual improved/maintained camping site. Thanks all.

i think you're in luck- the statute of limitations on illegal camping just so happens to be a couple of years! you no longer have to hide from the law!

Only if it was NPS run, they require a permit to breathe I believe and don't step on a twig or you'll face stiffer penalties than if you killed your first born (I'm only half joking here).

Oh there are Native lands but, that would be a trespassing issue not a permit issue per se if they prohibit camping, same as other private lands, doubt they'd go after you now over it.

I wasn't worried about the Feds beating down my door... more of a "for future reference" question. I got that Alaska bug, so I know I can't stay away forever.
