Hi there.

Thank you all for the valuable information I have gotten so far from this site. I am moving to Anchorage in the fall for work from Washington, DC.

I am really into music (local and unknown national acts), crafts and volleyball. Those are the things that occupy my time in DC. Is there a scene for those things in Anchorage?

Does Anchorage have an arts district where arty/indie people live? I found where ever I move to a new city there is a district like that somewhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks-
Jamie.

I am sure you will find a group to migrate toward....lots of artists, and music minded as well......

The biggest problem I see is that you are in Anchorage....it sounds like you would fit right in if you went up to Talkeetna...no kidding, visit there what ever you do.....

Check into www.wholewheatradio.org

They cater to indie type tunes via an internet radio station and have in house concerts monthly. Matter of fact they are having one tonight.

I've been to a couple and it's a great time. The wheathole is located 7 miles out of downtown Talkeetna.

You can glance through here and see some of the past shows.
The J-Walk Blog

I'm not sure about the Anchorage area...Talkeetna is the place I go.

Keep in mind that Anchorage is not (by population standards) a big city. It boasts a population of probably 250K in the summer and maybe 25K less in the winter. The city is also spread out over an area about the size of the greater Los Angeles basin. You won't find an "artsy/indie" area of town (except for maybe "Beautiful Downtown Spenard"). The club and music scene varies from the likes of Chilkoot Charlies to former "fern bars" of the 80's to the trendy hip-hop 20-something club scene of today.

My suggestion would be to find a place to live that feels right to you and then go find your peer groups. Just don't fall into the "Cheekako" trap your first year up there (involves a lot of drinking, eating and gaining about 20 pounds).

Jsut remember that Anchorage is only about 25 miles from "Alaska". You'll know what I mean when you get up there.

Default "Cheekako" traps

Ha! Sounds like good advice. Has anyone written a book on avoiding Cheekako Traps? I bet it would be very funny....and invaluable.
