At least an hour. The 275/96 area and the 275/696 area can both be nightmares during rush hour, especially figuring in bad weather or road construction. Think of all the people who work in offices in Southfield or Troy heading home to the outer stretches of Oakland Co. after work. Not a pleasant commute. And if you try to go to Southfield from Saline without using either 96 or 696, it would take an eternity to traverse all of those other suburbs.

I think you need to figure out exactly where your husband will be working first and then determine the best place to live. Commuting back-and-forth between Ann Arbor and the Detroit area everyday would really suck and decrease his quality of life.
