Two friends of mine who currently live outside Detroit are saving up money to move out of their respective parents' homes to relocate to Ann Arbor. They don't plan to move until they land jobs in AA first, of course. Both guys are in their mid-20s, and initially won't have a great deal of money when they first get settled. What neighborhoods or sections of AA would you recommend that they check out that would be affordable and ideal for two guys in their 20s moving to a new town for the first time? I'd really appreciate any help you could offer!

Try the campus/Diag area. All the cheapest rentals are right down there by the main campus. Most of them are managed by sensible property managers who keep the places in good shape.

For guys in their mid-twenties, immediate downtown Ann Arbor would be the prime location. There is lots to do, from sports to cultural events and shopping to great restaurants. Like the above poster said, rentals should be well-maintained considering the fact that students typically rent these places. Obviously, the University of Michigan has lots and lots of undergraduate and graduate students living right in the downtown area, so needless to say, the best nightlife would be located right around the campus.
