In SW MI, Kalamazoo is your best bet (two universities and a community college, a couple of breweries and coffeeshops, lots of bars, some live music venues, an art school, rail connection to Chicago, etc.). K'zoo is also cheaper than AA. But AA is much more urbane and liberal than K'zoo, if that's what you want.

There is a lively music festival scene in MI in the warmer months if you don't mind an occasional road trip. Google
--Wheatland
--Blissfest
--Buttermilk Jamboree
--Hoxeyville
--Electric Forest
--Sleepy Bear

If you want to be near big-city amenities, culture, and lakeshore recreation, I would echo Kalamazoo/Portage.
Here's some stuff I like about the area.
Kalamazoo Blues Fest - AM 590 - FM 96.5 | WKZO Everything Kalamazoo
Trail Map

This is the lakes area of Portage. Major shopping is on Westnedge south of I-94.
Bing Maps - Driving Directions, Traffic and Road Conditions

Best-area southside real estate (I like the Zillow maps):
Texas Township Real Estate & Texas Township MI Homes for Sale - Zillow
Portage Real Estate & Portage MI Homes for Sale - Zillow

This has a downloadable festival guide.

Ann Arbor meets most of your criteria and is a great place to live. Definitely lots of music, culture, micro-brews, great food, etc. While there are some nice places to go for a walk in and around Ann Arbor, if you really enjoy getting into into something more wild and remote, you'll need to head north for a weekend or longer.

If you want to be outside of town, but close, Dexter, Saline, and Chelsea are all good options. But I really like living in Ann Arbor itself. For me, being 15 minutes or less, door to door, from the cultural events and restaurants that are downtown and around campus can't be beat.
