You didn't mention your price range, but there really is no "less than average" in A2, there are some "cheaper" options, but in the last 2 years rents have almost doubled in some areas. Many rentals are leased a year in advanced, some companies allow 2-3 years in advance...and they are usually full. I've lived in the A2 area most of my life and found one thing to be true....there really isn't such a thing as "cheap" living.

The cheapest places in my experience are the houses that have been subdivided into apartments, which are all over the campus area. (I lived there for 8 years.) Some of them are pretty rank, however. The only really, really affordable places in town are the ones you share with 8 roommates.

I have no idea what average is, but $700 can get me a 1 bedroom anywhere in Ann Arbor. If you're willing to live with a roommate, then $500 would work too. Any lower and you may to have to live with a lot of people if you want to be in the downtown area.

Not to my knowledge. Unless you are willing to live outside of the city. You might be able to find a $750-800 studio or one bedroom, but in a subdivided house, be careful. The rent might be appealing, but there are plenty of slumlords who rent dumps, don't do any maintenance, and screw tenants out of any deposit they might have paid up front. The professionally managed complexes around town are generally expensive and most have cheap construction (thin walls, etc), so be prepared for a tight rental market. If you are a student, there are plenty of lux high rises being built around town, some $1000 per bedroom with lots of amenities. I think AA is overrated in general and getting very expensive, but if you are a student, it's a fun place while you are attending school.
