..... Show Low is a very small town where everybody knows everybody. NPC is the only college up there. There are no other colleges up there.

A reply for MHEIDI,
I live in Snowflake actually about 15 miles from town in a very rural area. Yes, I hear stories of drug activities going on (mainly meth) but have never seen/ heard/ experienced ANYTHING directly--just read about it in the local papers. My neighborhood is a very friendly safe place to be. In fact I have a number of single women living alone around me and they all feel perfectly safe.
Show Low and Snowflake are two very different towns. Both are VERY conserative, but I think Snowflake is MUCH, MUCH more so even than Show Low. So much so, That we'll be moving soon. It IS a great place to live if you yourself are VERY conservative , but if you're not it's probably not where you want to be.

Hey, I'm moving to Springerville/Eagar area end of August myself. Show Low is beautiful, where I'm going its more in a valley setting and very small town. I dont mind small towns at all, not sure what Springerville has for stores? Anyone know?

Depends on what you are shopping for. The last time I spent a lot of time shopping in Springerville/Eagar full time was when I was there with about 10,000 or so of my closest friends between June 22, 2002 and June 29, 2002. Off topic, but I'd rather sleep in the gutter than EVER stay at Reed's motor lodge again, ever. Yeah, I gotta grudge.

There's the (world?) renowned Western Drug which is a drug and sporting goods store on E Main (US 60/191), basically like an old west "general store", but lacking in groceries. For groceries I 'think' there's both a Safeway and a Basha's, for me I'll shop at Eddie's (Basha's) place everytime. If you're looking for more 'big city' type shopping, you'll have to hit ShowLow.

good luck

mheidi,
The ONLY way to find out about anywhere is to go there. I am in the same situation as you. looking for that dream house/place to retire too. That does give me the advantage of not having to look for work. I have looked at a lot of places and NE AZ and the White mountains seem to be the place.

I am going to spend a week there soon and just wander around, check properties, and talk to people. I find that the local coffee shops can give you a good indications of a town. I havenet decided on a particular spot yet, but I think closer to Show Low is nice because of the trees.

Best of luck in your search.

I am single & have lived in Show Low almost 3 yrs. Most druggies live in the White Mountain Lakes area from what I've heard. The police reports are published twice a week and arrests are made, same as everywhere usually from traffic stops made. This is a quiet town, except in summer & holidays when it fills with campers, motorhomes & fisherman. Traffic gets a little heavy but nothing like it was in So Cal. I live a mile from Fools Hollow Lake & Campground and it fills up quickly. There is a Safeway & 24-hr super Walmart that is packed in summer. We need a Costco or Target or some other store. Other than that there are plenty of yard sales, farmers markets and events every weekend to attend. The ski slopes are an hour away with something like 39 runs. We have a small casino just the other side of Pinetop.

Try Northland Pioneer College in Holbrook. They may have some satellite locations as well.
