Hey everyone,

I just moved here from Indiana four months ago and witnessed the massive dust storm first hand. I have posted the HD video footage I shot with my camera and you can check it out here:

YouTube - ‪Phoenix Dust Storm 2011 - Arizona Dust Storm Monsoon July 2011 in Gilbert, Arizona | Haboob Cloud‬‏

Please don't judge my commentary - keep in mind I was scrambling for my camera and trying to get the footage as fast as possible because this thing was moving fast!

All I have to say is that it was the most incredible storm I have ever witnessed and I was glad to be there. It was AWESOME! But I feel sorry for those who were driving or those who were in potentially dangerous situations of course.

Good footage you got there. These are rare--not the ususual "dust storms" we get-- as you probably know by the news coverage. Looked like a movie thriller.

Very good video, you look like you had some fun. We only get one of those every few years.
Here are a few from years past.

I love this one of the peoples reactions. Entertaining. This was from 1993.

Don't want to fill the whole page here but we have em every few years, only the last couple have been filmed by regular people. People have just recently found easy to access video cameras in the last 10 years or so and with the mass media we now have more videos of them. It's nice to see some of the footage and compare the sizes.
For some reason this year we are getting national coverage. In the early days nobody really noticed our weather much. It's nice to be so popular. Maybe it will draw some weather hunters or storm catchers our way. On the hunt for a great "haaaboob".

This one got national coverage because of its sheer size.... 50 miles or more wide, and quite "tall",and coming right down the center of the Valley. While we get dust storms every year, I haven't seen one that size in my memory. There have been some other larger ones in the past that at least got some photos on national news, but not the coverage this one got.

Just a suggestion - next time one of these is coming at you, I'd bring in the lawn furniture

I live in an area that has 60 to 90 mph winds 3 or 4 times a year. In October 2003 after 3 days of winds - I had a 12 foot wide trampoline in my backyard. I posted a lost and found on the street mailbox -- the guy who owned it lived 2 streets north.

As Yoda would say ... hates the wind, I do!

Yes, you are right! That would be the reason. It was a massive one that is for sure and I can understand why they would cover it more. The visibility or lack of was down right scary. I thought it was nice to share the past dust storms with others who didn't know we had them more frequently than talked about. A lot seem to think this is the first one we've had. It was the largest but when it's 30 miles wide it can be just as awe-inspiring when your on the ground.

On another note I located a funny article that I found about it's size being blamed on our recession and foreclosures here. I had to laugh about that, who would have thought? Not sure if I buy it or not yet. Some are on about climate change as well, that they will be larger in the future but I hear the monsoon is way to hard for them to really predict. I don't yet know if I believe climate change either. I guess I will stay tuned. So many sides it's hard to guess the future.

For now it's just exciting to be in the news for such an awesome event. With all the camera phones now there is so much coverage it's nice to see them all. I think there were about 50 uploaded to youtube. I hope people realize they aren't that dangerous and are not a reason to avoid the valley. We know how to deal with them.

Massive amounts of strong winds from severe thunderstorms kick up miles of dirt and turn it into a huge dust cloud. The soot falls down but the dust remains and is carried away all at once. Simply it's, very strong winds kick up dirt and turn it into a dust cloud.

Yeah last week some VERY strong winds came through just as i was getting off work, that wind was blowing sooooooo hard! And it was nonstop, it blew a couple of trees down in my paprtment complex. I couldn't hardly push the door open to exit from my job that wind was so hard and strong.
