I was just reading an article dated 01/18/2011 and it took place in Kayenta. The article was about all the stray dogs wandering the streets in Kayenta. They would all congregate outside of Burger King, McDonald's and a gas station looking to see if someone would have a little bit of a heart and compassion to give these poor souls something to eat. But of course people would just drive up or walk in and not even come out and give them a french fry! This woman who wrote the article went into Burger King and bought a hamburger for each and they ate it like they had not eaten in a while. What is wrong with people? How would it feel if that was your dog? I'm sure you wouldn't like it. I can't believe the things that go on today, so many dogs that are left out in the street as if they were garbage when all they want is to be loved. They give us "unconditional love" and we thank them for that and for everything else that they have seen us through but yet when they need us-WE ARE NOT THERE FOR THEM!!! I'm sure you're probably thinking that I am a crazy animal lover like some people are called but I am not. I do love animals and I do have a dog that if it weren't for him I would be dead. So yes, I stick up for the poor dogs who are thrown to the streets because we are their voice as the ASPCA has used. They are the most pure and innocent animals in the world-just look into their eyes and all you see is innocence. Please stop treating them as garbage and I do hope that soon if not already there will be a shelter for them to go to especially in a state that has such different climate changes. Do it for them, I'm sure if they could they would do it for us. Thank you and God bless you all.

There is no no-kill shelter in the Kayenta area, which is in the Navajo Nation. It does not surprise me that there are a number of stray dogs in that area, and it is a hard thing for animal lovers to see. I suspect that spaying and neutering of dogs on the reservation may not be as common as it is elsewhere, hence the high numbers.
