I have heard that many people go to Algodones because it is a lot more affordable than US dentists.
I am planning a CA trip so it would not be out of the way, but for safety's sake would you do it?

I would think twice about going into Mexico right now for most anything.

IMO

Me neither! I am boycotting Mexico until the U.S. Stops stops its support of the Mexican drug cartels by its so-called "war on drugs"

Do it all the time and have been for several years now. Thousands do. There is nothing to fear. I will not go to a US dentist again if I don't have to - bunch of snake oil salesman and ripoff artists. You can't believe a thing they tell you. You get treated better and it cost 1/4 to 1/3 of what it would in the US. I go to Algodones.

Why punish Mexico for actions of our government? It would make more sense to say you're boycotting Mexico because many in its government are cartel backed.

As to the original post, I've thought about going down before when I didn't have insurance. I ended up paying out of pocket for a standard cleaning once. I weighed my options and decided to cover my costs here rather than pay out of pocket there and have to pay for travel expenses as well as taking up my time.

Please report back if you decide to go to Mexico for your dental needs. I am always curious what people have to say. I know a few border towns actually survive economically by dental tourism.

When we were full timers in our RV we went there as do most of the snowbirds and full time RV'rs. Take a look at some of the RV forums and you will find suggestions for dentists etc that they've used and had good work done. $5 gets you a parking space right next to the border crossing (do not drive into Mexico) and once across the border it is a short walk to most of the dentists. If you're looking for major work like root canals etc then plan to spend the night in Yuma so you can go back the next day to finish it up. Crowns, caps etc are usually done the same day, while you wait. They take the impression of your tooth (teeth) and there's a courier right there to pick it up and take it to the place that makes 'em, unlike in the US where it can take a few days to a week to get a cap/crown back.

Algodones 10 miles from Yuma. First exit at the Algodones Casino in California. It's just before the Border Check Point on I 8 where I was asked "Are you carrying any produce ?"
