Okay, I know I'm really pushing it now looking for a good sailing town in Arizona ;-) But I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a fun smaller town near a lake where sailing is possible.

Preferences (I know we won't get them all!)

1. Low crime, good for families
2. Town is progressive in some ways and aesthetically pleasing (tourism?)
3. Prefer tolerable summers—maybe we need elevation?
4. On or near a body of water where sailing is practicable
5. Within 2-3 hours of a major airport

Thanks for any advice!

Lots of sailboats at Lake Pleasant - near Peoria and Surprise. I know a couple of people here who have larger boats in San Diego and go over on weekends/holidays/vacations.

Lake Havasu has a few sailboats but dont go sailing on a busy weekend because you will get run over by all the power boats. The nice thing is when its windy most of the power boats will be in the channel. For some pictures of Lake Havasu see this website http://www.newtohavasu.net/ (broken link)

AZ actually has one of the highest rates of boat ownership in the nation ..... just not sure how great the sailing would be

Prescott could work for what you're looking for - a little cooler, a little more elevation .... a lot of retirees, but their main square area is pretty quaint (IMO) and there are a lot of forest parks and some lakes in the area

apparently they have their own sailing club

Take a look at Wickenburg. It's a small town close to Lake Pleasant.

That's a myth.
Arizona Has More Boats Per Capita Than Any State
It simply isn't true. In 2004, Arizona ranked 30th among the states with respect to the number of boats registered in the state. As a percentage of it's population, it ranked 43rd out of 50, with only 2.56% of the population owning boats.

Default Havasu

The "wide spot" in the lake is about 2 miles by 2 miles but its a LONG lake.. In Feb the last couple years, there has been a trailer sail event -

Mod Cut: No links with less than 10 posts.

When I retire (if I can ever retire), I plan to spend the winters at Lake Havasu and rent a slip for my sailboat. I have only been to Lake Havasu a few times so could be wrong but I "understand" the winter does not have all the power boating activity and is still very pleasant for sailing.

That is true about Havasu. It is windy frequently in the winter too. I like to fish it but the winds make it a real challenge most of the time. I guess sailors like that. I hate wind.
