I know the Border Patrol makes a lot of money off of travelers with nickel bags of weed in their cars. I wonder if the DEA can make a few extra bucks by setting up speed traps. Then the TSA and the ATF can start randomly auditing IRS tax returns.
I assume you have something to back that statement up? Source?

Are those "migrant-sniffing" dogs they use at that checkpoint?

Border Patrol checkpoints near Yuma nab hordes of pot users headed back from the beach - News - Phoenix - Phoenix New Times

It's a pretty good industry in Yuma.
Yuma and Wellton Defense Lawyers, DUI and Marijuana Specialists - Border patrol checkpoint cases in Yuma and Wellton, Arizona require an attorney

Ever wonder why the checkpoint is only eastbound and located in Arizona? Arizona's marijuana possession laws are much stricter than California's. Possession in Arizona of any amount (even a trace amount), is a felony.

Boompa. People will be less annoyed if you have appropriate shelter for those detained at these makeshift checkpoints. Those traveling with animals and/or those with medical issues are the ones put in the crossfires when the temps are over 100. Like my wife and 3 animals. You'll find more understanding if and when you do that.

My elderly dog is very heat-sensitive. I would have thrown a hissy fit and probably landed in jail if they made him stay in that kind of heat for that long. I agree, they should at least provide shelter for those detained. Not everyone who gets detained is a criminal. I realize they have a job to do, but they need to do it humanely, and keeping an animal or person with medical problems out in the sun in those temps is not what I consider humane.

Speaking of drug dogs, the checkpoint I go through at least a couple times a week always has a drug dog sniffing every car. I saw the dog nab a car in front of me not too long ago. Afterwards there was a lot of celebrating, whooping and hollering and playing tug with the dog as a reward. It sounded like a party. Those dogs are good at what they do.

I'm sorry protecting America inconveniences you and your cats. I have to go through a checkpoint to get to an interstate from my home. Like all Law Enforcement they get critisized for two things:

1. When they do something

2. When they do nothing

Doing something is better than doing nothing

If we want to set up permanent checkpoints to bust recreational drug users, then we should set up DEA checkpoints on the interstates (except the Supreme Court has ruled those to be illegal). The Border Patrol should be "securing the border", but they've found "Operation Citation" to be more lucrative and "successful" in raising their stats.

I wonder how soon it will be until California realizes they'd have a big source of potential revenue to help balance their budget if they set up "Border Patrol" checkpoints on westbound lanes from Arizona so they can start fining and charging felonies on anyone transporting firearms in a manner that violates California gun laws.

When they can train sniffer dogs to detect guns and Hoppe's 9, it will all be over. However, it's perfectly legal to transport firearms from AZ to CA if you do so according to the federal Peaceable Journey law. So even if a dog could and did alert to a gun in the car, it would not constitute PC for a search. Unfortunately, most sheeple consent to a search when asked, so PC is often not a problem.

We don't have enough money to finish the fence let alone provide a cool conditioned space with beverages for those being questioned. I feel badly for your wife and you, the pets as well, but we have to expect these things to only get worse in the future if things are not changed. Take lots of ice and water. Things sucketh right now.

The officer just needs a drug dog that responds to a "sit" command whenever he approaches a vehicle displaying an NRA sticker. Especially any vehicle that doesn't have a separate locking trunk, like a pickup truck or SUV. There's his PC....
Peaceable Journey law allows you to travel from one lawful possession area to another lawful possession area if you're passing through an unlawful possession area. It doesn't cover trips from Arizona to California and back again (unless maybe you're taking a cruise to Alaska). Even claiming that you're going to Yosemite won't apply, because even the new National Park law says the park is bound by state law.
Does the Peaceable Journey law extend to magazines that hold more than 10 rounds? Those are a felony to possess in California. If I'm not mistaken, committing a crime (such as carrying a 12 round magazine) while in possession of a firearm will allow that firearm to be seized, as well as the vehicle transporting it.
Will everyone remember to empty their magazines before entering the state? People v. Hale says a loaded magazine near an empty handgun still means the handgun is loaded.

I'm not trying to derail this into a 2nd amendment thread. Maybe a different example would be a checkpoint to do emissions testing and fining vehicles that don't pass California Air Resources Board emission standards. I'm just saying that if Arizona keeps using the Border Patrol in ways other than what the Border Patrol is intended, only because the Border Patrol has an exemption to set up checkpoints like this within 100 miles of an international border, don't be surprised if things get even more "creative" in the hunt to balance budgets.

I realize Border Patrol is just doing its job, but it's no fun being treated like a criminal when you are a law abiding citizen. And that's exactly how they make you feel when you are detained. Those German shepherds can be pretty frightening.
