I've read the dmv site several times and can figure out what the VLT will be on my 2012 Honda but trying to figure it out for my 94 Mazda Miata is confusing. It references the reduction from MSRP rate SINCE it's been registered in Arizona. I'm hoping that doesn't mean an out of state car has to go all the way back to 60% of the original MSRP even though it's twenty years old . I'm sure I'm just not understanding the way its calculate so thought someone who has been through it could maybe enlighten me. Not real happy that I'll have to pay $400 on the Honda when I just paid $1093 in Md. sales tax when I bought it. What's the sales tax on a new vehicle in Az and do you still have to pay the VLT with the initial registration?

That "since it's been registered in Arizona" threw me too, but I just registered my 2003 car, and it looks like they didn't go all the way back. I paid $82 for a 2 year registration. 1 year would have been $50. Much better than I expected, and much cheaper than the $130 per year I paid where I moved from.

It is based on book (their book) value at time of registration - not back to when it was new. It is going to be very cheap - well under $100 per year - so don't sweat it.

As a comparison, Tom . . .

My 1986 Jeep "bottomed out" at a little under 25 bucks per year about ten years ago. I have a feeling you'll be pleasantly surprised with your Miata.

I just renewed my registration on a 2011 (purchased and registered in 2010 in AZ) Mazda CX-9 and it was still $450. I was expecting my three year old vehicle to be less by now but it isn't dropping much year to year. The formula confuses me also.
