Here's the story in todays USA Today newspaper.
Grand Canyon cites people for entering closed park

It's what the Rangers want. For nobody to be in "their" park. They don't want the public in any ntl park or forest.

Couple of ideas.

Get a map of Kaibab Nat'l Forest and look over the north section. There is quite a bit of canyon land that is not in the Nat'l park. If you have a 4 whl drive take a look at places like Jumpup point and canyon.

Looking for Grand Canyon experts here.

I have a trip next week to GRCA that I've been planning for a long time, and am going anyway despite the shutdown.

What I am looking for is advice from people in the know as to the best way to enter the park and hike for a few days, while avoiding parking on National Park property, and avoiding having to go through the main gates/entrance stations.

Any thoughts? At this point I don't care what part of the canyon we see or anything. As long as we get some good hiking in and get to experience some part of the canyon.

Thanks in advance!
The biggest thing about hiking in Grand Canyon is that if there's an accident, or you don't have enough water, or you don't bring enough clothes or food, someone needs to know where you went.

You're supposed to sign in at the Park. If the park is closed I believe that means Park rescue is shutdown as well. It would be pretty awful to fall and break your back or get delirious from dehydration while waiting til the shutdown is over.

Pick up the book "Death in Grand Canyon". It's a great documentary with full stories of the many statitstics, er, people, who break the rules when hiking in Grand Canyon.

Just not a smart idea.

Issuing citations to hikers is apparently an essential government function.

This whole business with the National Parks is such a joke, and I can see it backfiring in the future. Whenever some budget crisis starts brewing in Congress (which appears to be at least an annual event now), people will cancel plans to visit any National Park and do something else instead... go to a state park, to Disney World, etc.

I can understand why they have people sign in when they are open, which is the same main reason why people can't be on the trails when the park is closed.

I'd like them to get this mess straightened out ASAP, too, but I would not encourage the OP to go into the Canyon at this time. The tribal areas may be a better option.

In my opinion, keeping people out of Grand Canyon when there are no rescuers is about keeping people safe (whether from themselves or the weather), not about breaking any laws.

I would assume from your alias that you have a clue about hiking and that as such, you would have a profound respect for the elements, and the level of experience required for hiking any of the trails at the Grand Canyon.
