I'm actually considering going home from San Diego by taking I 8 to El Centro and cutting up along the Salton Sea to Indio to catch I 10 going through towns such a Brawley. Yeah, I'd miss Palm Springs and Banning but would also avoid the traffic of I 15 and 215.I'll be at the Giants Chargers game in a couple weeks. Has anyone gone this route ? Thanks

I fully support and prefer the Check Points over the alternatives.

Why would you want to drive so many extra miles, plus, I 10 can be very busy too, the 8 is, wel should be a dream.... nice and no traffic...
Make a stop in Tacna AZ, it sounds weird, but there is an outstanding restaurant, Basque/Spanish, but great steaks and the best Jalopeno poppers....
Also kind of a different place, makes you feel being back in the sixties, everything is made of brick and heavy timber.
Very reasonable priced. If you don't like it, I pay.......

Always welcome takes involving good authentic restaurants. Exit 42 is Tacna it looks like. Can't say I've ever stopped there since I travel with my 3 pets. Great advice though. I can only attest to having a date shake in Dateland.

Running east bound, take the exit, turn left cross the RR tracks and about 200 ft on the right, can not mis it.

Basque Etchea Basque restaurant Tacna Arizona United States (USA) — Euskal Kultura

And some reviews. It really is the last place you expect this kind restaurant, great ambiance. If you go, please let me know what you think about it. Thanks.
And have fun at the ball game. I am not in sports, but folks seem to have a great time...

Hmmm, more scenic routes from San Diego to Phoenix. I agree that I-10 is much better than I-8. But you could take some of the old US 80 sections around Alpine, CA or so through some of the smaller towns. Or there's this:

Sorry for getting off topic OP . . . .

The Dateland border check point seems to have been relocated to just east of the Foothills Blvd on the outskirts of Yuma...in the east bound lanes.

Or this route Teddyearp. Pretty busy in the weekends at the dunes, you might litterly see 10.000 bikes and cars running in the sand.
There are always a few ambulance waiting for the next evil knievil wannabee.

I encountered a BP checkpoint on I-10 W going from phx to palm springs. It was a temporary one. There is always one on I=19 n, at about Tubac. It is a huge nuisance for people living in the area, and another small business killer. Unemployment is still over 20% in Santa Cruz county, and the climate is so much better than phx.

110% confirmed as I drove I 8 earlier today. Had the dogs out but no hassles this time. The one east of Dateland at the Spot Road exit was still constructed but no one was there. That's the one that detained me for an hour last year.
