Whoever they are they commute forever, haul all their water, use a septic, and like to be alone. Ranches tend to be in higher elevations.

I don't know, but why don't you drive down one of those dusty trails to one of those outlying dry ranches you see in the distance from the freeway, and ask them.

If you live please report back to us. . I'm curious too.

Agreed. I'm in Mohave County where many people DO live out in the middle of nowhere AND commute 50 miles 1 way to work, many times driving on dirt roads to get there.

Noticed this over the weekend. Saw some rather remote settlements out near Bagdad and wondered what these people do for a living.

We are not exactly in the middle of nowhere, being only 15 miles from town which is easily commutable, but "making" a living in a remote area, is vastly different than living in a remote area. Retired...your skill set really only matters as long as you are able to be as self sufficient as you desire. Need an income and you will commute or better, have a skill set that easily transitions to telecommuter status, however the main requirement then is adequate power/internet access. I worked as a telecommuter prior to retirement, my wife is currently a telecommuter. Our main priority, regardless of where we are is internet access. At one point we had satellite internet, which IMO is not conducive to telecommuting...so that limits a telecommuter to being within the limits of broadband wired or broadband wireless access. Perhaps someone else will chime in regarding the latest Hughesnet satellite offering and how it supports telecommuting.

Regards

Well that makes sense that people just commute a long way.

I was guessing that they have satellite internet and make money online somehow or are retired, but wasn't sure.

A friend of me had satelite internet, it was turtle slow. To load one picture on image shack took like 30 minutes......

You most likely do not mean the select few who reside in lean-to's around the desert, inside arroyos, or old, abandoned structures.

There happen to be certain retirees in Arizona who prefer to be "out there" in more remote housing, because their income is not a concern, and commuting for them is basically a road trip whenever the direct deposits hit.

Most work at the mine. When they retire or quit, they must leave because the mine owns the land. A large number of them move to nearby communities. Wiki the town and the city web. Lots of activity there
