I was watching a show on the weather channel where people were mining gem stones in various places is AZ. I was thinking maybe that would make a nice family vacation- ie. mine stones during the day and camp out at night. I don't know if there are vacations that could accommodate something like this in AZ but this east coaster would sure like to hear any info anyone could supply who knows about these things.

Thanks in advance

Are you sure it was AZ? They do that in Colorado on Mt. Antero and Mt. White which are outside Salida near the "Crested Butte" ski resort. We were just up there a few weeks ago, there was about 8 feet of snow on the mountains, but it would make a fun summer camping trip.

You can "rockhound" but actual mining requires permits (something apparently one one of the miners on the Prospectors show actually had - LOL) and from what I understand most of the areas that produce gems are already claimed. But have fun looking!

I imagine you can get local info in Salida. There's a couple of hotels and lots of camping in the area.

You can definitely tour mines (in Bisbee for example) but I don't know of any places that will actually let you mine yourself. That would be an interesting vacation, for sure.

Thanks everyone. I just checked and the TV show is called prospectors. I think some of the sites are in fact in Colorado.

We have camped and prospected for geodes and petrified wood all over the place in the area known as Ward Terrace, near Tuba city. We have found whole petrified trees! Very good exercise in hauling out 50 and 80 lb chunks over hill and dale.

Does the tribe require a special permit to collect there?

You need a permit for everything you want to do on a Res, fish, hunt, hike, traverse, etc...it's pay back time....
