To any current or former residents, or those who are often in the Winslow/Navajo County area, what are your impressions? I have a possible job opportunity out in this area that would bring me from Georgia. How would you describe the community? A decent place to start up a family? Are there any negatives or things to be cautious of?

Winslow? A bump in the road that only exists as a food and fuel stop for the I-40 and govt jobs. I hit an awesome snowstorm there a few years ago. Stopped to use the restroom and had to go into 4WD to get my truck rolling again. Literally dropped 4 inches in 10 minutes!

There is very little there. 9,000 residents, 38,000 cows and 42 meth labs... No I'm just guess about the labs, there's probably not over a dozen.

A place to start a family? Sure, if you want your kids to hate you and leave the second they turn 18.

The good thing is you are only about a hour from Flagstaff.

There's nothing wrong with Winslow, except that there isn't much there to help you with family development. Living in or closer to Flagstaff and commuting to Winslow (58 miles via I-40) may be a better option for you.

Well, looks like Flagstaff is the consensus here.

Winslow has grown on me since I moved to AZ four years ago. The red rocks of the Painted Desert are spectacular. Plus there is a cool lake you can enjoy in McHood Park on Rte 99 a few miles south of town. There are cliffs 30 plus feet high to freefall into the lake. There are some mom and pop joints in town including La Posada which is a really cool experience. The western edge of Winslow north of I 40 has some decent modern subdivisions as well. The cupboard is not bare. The desolate beauty of the Painted Desert along with access to pine country 45 minutes south and the Petrified Forest some 50 miles east beyond Holbrook really offer unique beauty. Flagstaff is overpriced and the commute will get old fast. Twin Arrows Casino is the borderline between the heavy snow of Flag and the mostly snowfree winters of the Winslow area. Winslow is in a raindshadow so while it only gets 8 inches of rain per year, it gets about a tenth of Flag's snow (10" vs 90"). If you commute from Flag, you will deal with some I 40 winter closures most years. The one thing about Winslow is the wind. At 5000 ft and relatively flat on the Colorado Plateau, that wind can howl in the winter and spring. Fall probably the best season in Winslow from september through november.

You want to walk west of the parking lot at McHood Park on a dirt road and some really cool cliff jumping. The housing and rentals are far cheaper and you are 60 miles closer to your job than Flag minus the gas and wear and tear on the car. Flag and Prescott are the two most overpriced areas of the state where cost of rentals or buying a home not on par with income opportunities. Many from So Cal have second homes in Flag and have caused prices to sky rocket. If you start on rent, gotta compete with NAU kids too.

Nothing wrong with Holbrook 30 miles east with similar cost for rental or mortgage. Plus the Petrified Forest is at your fingertips.

Being a CO is the main employment opportunity there unless you do a service job at one of the restaurants, walmart or selling tee shirt adjacent to Standing on a Corner. Certainly not ample high paying jobs in town outside the prison which starts in the mid 30s salary range. It actually pays a bit more than other prisons since Winslow isn't considered an ideal location for beginning CO's.
