Our son was in an accident and the insurance company totaled his car. Because the accident happened two days before his registration expired, he didn't bother renewing. But he just left it hanging out there. We just got a notice of expired registration and I want to notify MVD to de-register it. Unfortunately, there only seems to be a place for changes in address, owners, and liens. There's something about salvage, but it seems to be for registering the car, not taking the registration off.

Anyone on here know what the link is to notify the MVD that a car is out of commission? I know if you don't take care of these things they come back and bite you..
Thanks!

When my wife's car got totaled the insurance company handled all the details. If your insurance does nothing for you just call the DMV and let them know.
One year we got a notice to re-new shortly after a vehicle was out of commission and we just wrote on the notice the vehicle was destroyed at the junkyard and sent it back to them. Never heard about it again.
I don't think anything is going to happen since the car is out of commission. If the car was repaired and on the road again then you would be in trouble. The only way the DMV knows that a vehicle is still operable is if a cop stops you and you get a ticket for no registration, then you have a problem.

Great suggestions so far, R Cowgirl . . .

I would strongly recommend gathering up all of the paperwork involved and make a visit to your local MVD office ASAP.

A hassle, YES, however, incorrectly completed, incompletely completed or not completed at all could very well create nightmares in the future.

Good Luck

Thanks everyone. I was trying to solve it this weekend and MVD is closed. I'll call tomorrow. I did find some info on ADOT. The Ins co is supposed to handle it... but as Bummer says, it's important to follow up.

Wise decision, R Cowgirl . . .

Nowadays it is just NOT SAFE to trust others to do something so important.
