Last weekend we drove up to the Canyon to enjoy the results of the big snowstorms. I was amazed at how many morons parked along the shoulder of I-17 and let their kids play in the snow alongside the highway. At one point, where admittedly the area was quite beautiful with all the snow on the ground and the trees, there were literally dozens of cars parked on the shoulder with groups of kids playing, parents taking pictures, even a kid on top of a parked car as the traffic zoomed by at 75 or more. They were all parked so close together there is no way they could have gotten safely back on the highway. I could not believe how these parents did not comprehend how dangerous this was and what risk they were placing themselves, their children, and others in. I'm not talking about the folks who get off at the exits outside Flagstaff and park there. These people were actually right on the side of the main highway. I really hope DPS gave these idiots tickets.

Tonight, driving home from a night out, I saw one of the electronic sign boards actually had a message " Do not park on highways to play in snow"

We're lucky no one was killed. Yet.

Because we have become a nation of ignorant fools. I used to want to live in Flagstaff, but this winter and the gridlock of flatlanders has cured me.

Isn't it amazing, JohnP . . .

how well some of these kids survive in spite of their parents?

I noticed too that it seems to be a popular thing in AZ (NM too), to make the side of the freeway your personal rest area, even when there is an exit less than 1/4 mile ahead! I know some might be broken down, but most look like fairly new cars. You're constantly reminded by signage to move over for stopped vehicles. So I do, in a big rig semi, and now I'm holding everybody up! I can't be playing Pole Position in an 18-wheeler. Lately I've been just staying in the right lane, I might ease off the the gas a little. And of course if there is a cop or tow-truck, I'll do what I can to get over.

People from the valley love to come up to the mountains of Prescott and Flagstaff to play in the snow.
But many don't know how to drive in it and think their 4 WD is absolute protection from slipping on snow and ice.
Many accidents as a result.

Where is the high way patrol or the police when you need them? These people need to be ticketed for parking along the freeway to let their kids play in the snow. Unbelievable.

Two things lower-elevation Arizonans love to do (besides complain about traffic, weather & politics):

Participate in snowball fights & make snowmen -- by the ROADSIDE!

Put them ALL in the hoosegow.

Okay I've done this before. Not with kids or as recklessly as OP is describing, but I've done it.

On the side of I-17? Or did you get off at an exit?

Never on I17. An exit or along smaller freeways like the 260 in the white mountains.
