This was recently opposed but this kind of stuff bothers me about Arizona. The Republican talking heads "preach" about removing bureaucracy and creating opportunities, but they will oppose fantasy sports on moral grounds and special interests (the Tribes). It's just more hypocrisy from Republicans and a big reason why moderates are switching sides.

And I think the Tribes are silly for opposing this. It's not going to take away from people playing in their casinos. The fantasy sports demographic is completely different from traditional gamblers who play cards and slots. If anything, the Tribes could capitalize upon this and make more money by catering to fantasy sports watchers and having large screen televisions with fantasy stats constantly displaying on their screens. They will get more people into their casinos for sure.

Bill would legalize fantasy sports in Arizona

OPPOSED: SB 1515: Fantasy Sports Gambling

I don't know where you get your information from but fantasy sports is gambling and the customer base is right in line with casino patrons. You people trying to legalize it is amazing to me unless you are one of the few winners that sit there 6 hours a day with expansive algorithms that help you win. It is gambling plain and simple it is just sophisticated gambling, think of card counting to an extreme. If I'm not mistaken these companies even send their employees to protests where they get the crowds, large percentage are their employees, to chant crap like "skill not luck" which is total bull. Shady people doing shady things, no thanks.

As for special interests the tribes are actually kept in check with the agreement we have right now and they pay us a ton of money at the same time. But lets ruin a relationship, which really only helps us, for a couple companies to make millions, wait you are a liberal? I feel like I am in a twilight zone when a liberal starts to argue for companies to make money at the expense of their customers and it is up to Republicans to fight against those corporations.

I think Frontline just did a piece on it actually, yep here is the link: The Fantasy Sports Gamble | FRONTLINE | PBS

It certainly is gambling and gambling is/can be fun. I still gamble on sports and I am fairly good at it. Never done the fantasy stuff though. I would love the tribal casino's to have sportsbooks but since they don't I utilize other means.

Did ya do any research?? This bill was introduced by republicans, every yes vote came from republicans and every democrat voted a resounding NO. Your bipartisan rant is invalid.

Feb 22, 2016 vote - SB 1515 - 52nd Legislature - 2nd Regular Session - Arizona State Legislature - Open States

Isn't draft kings being investigated by almost every state attorney general where its legal anyways?

I'm kind of proud of our legislators, actually, for being one of the few states that didn't jump right into this morass.

Whether one opposes or support legalized fantasy sports gambling, clearly there are a host of legal issues being worked out in other states and I think it may be best for Arizonans on both sides of this issue to sit it out until the legal ramifications are resolved in other jurisdictions, e.g. New York.

My understanding of these sites is that almost all of the money is won by "professional" competitors anyway who run algorithms, spreadsheets, etc., do it full time, and enter hundreds of entries every day with innumerable combinations of players. Doesn't seem like much fun. I suppose it could be more enjoyable in a single-entry tournament, or in a closed group with you and your friends or something.

The party peeing contest here is pretty off base.

You do have legitimate awful person Cathi Herrod throwing her two cents in, which will sway those she bought into office, but there is still reasonable discussion from both sides

It is a Republican who is looking to change the law to allow it. Cynically he is probably getting lobbied by the daily fantasy sports sites.

The concern about the poison pill is real and multiple tribes are already sore about the new West valley casino

Also, AZ was one of the only states where your couldn't sign up for daily fantasy going into last football season

This past season many other states have ruled daily fantasy to be gambling and are looking to shut it down. There is going to be a big battle in NY about this.

It would be best to wait and see how that plays out. Right now no one is getting arrested/fined/prohibited from playing in fantasy sports leagues.

With the national tide stating that daily fantasy is gambling I think the state could open themselves up for a large risk with the poison pill for little reward.

Let the dust settle and if the courts say it's not gambling then you have a precedent. If they rule it is gambling then the tribes would have their hammer for the poison pill

I think it is dumb that private for money leagues (not the daily ones) are "technically" illegal. Same goes for "free" march madness brackets (no one in Arizona can win the ESPN or other sites prizes).

The daily leagues are pure gambling but the year long, 10-14 team, leagues take skill and strategy. Just like poker, the more time you put into learning the game the better off you are.

I don't care how lucky you are a professional poker player will take all of your money in the long run. I suggest you read The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King. It tells the story of billionaire Andy Beal going up against a group of professional poker players.

I am sure he got paid to introduce the bill and I can also guarantee those who opposed it got some kind of kick back from the tribal casino.

Not just AZ - Here is where it is illegal: Hawaii, Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, and Washington State

It's strange that Nevada has every form outlawed - Casinos really do not like it
