Up here I never have to pull off the road during a hard storm because I can't see the road!
Hmmm, I don't know. I only saw a couple of monsoons when I visited & they fascinated me. The clouds looked like our tornado clouds, which was kind of scary, but nothing like a snowstorm where you can't see 10 feet in front of you. And there are still idiot's who go 50 mph when the rest go 20. You pass them when they go in the ditches though.

So, Minnesotans would think it was fun to go through a monsoon.

Yes, the monsoons are very scary and the desert smells horrible when it rains. Do not even think of living in Arizona

I have little knowledge of them - still so much to learn about Arizona! But, I do remember on the drive here, all along the highway were warnings about sandstorms. That worried me a bit & I was awfully glad when I got onto the highway to Sierra Vista & the signs stopped.

Shudder...I don't ever want to experience a sandstorm. And this coming from a woman who has driven in blizzards.

"Sandstorm" warnings? Arizonans usually don't refer to desert windstorms as "sandstorms". They've always been called dust storms - at least as far back as I can remember. Do you recall where these signs were?

Here's an interesting 2011 article by the NY Times about Arizona's dust storms:

My error. You're totally correct. It was dust storms. It's been awhile & that older age thing crops up.

Its funny the original posters on this thread were in March 2016 dissing the red states. Guess the people of the red states called the shots later that same year

I don't live in Arizona but my mother has and my sister presently is raising her family there. I drive through Arizona alot. The Sonoran Desert is the most beautiful of American deserts IMO. The saguaro cactus, the mountains and their raw geological shapes fading into the distance is magnificent. The true wildlife of the desert comes out at night. Yes it is hotter than hell but it is a desert. Also, the old west culture is still alive and well there.Where else can you read a sign on the highway that says Sore Finger Road? Phoenix is a beautiful, modern city. Not only that, I notice that obesity, at least among the anglo population is rare, unlike other states. I've never seen so many thin, fit people.
