I mean I get it, folks move across country and reply upon online listings sometimes, but to actually take possession without walking through first is just . . . . terrible.

I did exactly that with the first house I rented in Prescott, but researched the heck out of the owner and the property on-line first. BUT, I assumed all the risk and if I got screwed that was on me. In the end, the house was good (I even helped as best I could with their rodent in the ceiling issue) and we survived.
I was lucky, the owners couldn't have been nicer, more appreciative or helpful. Typical AZ bas&*#@s!
