Well I gave 'em a week.

My bad, I just assumed everyone in Arizona drives a lifted 4wd truck with 34" tires and a winch.

I didn't realize that road went that high. All I remember is it took like 6 hours to drive 120 miles and so many hairpin turns it nearly wore my shoulders out. We only saw like three other fools, er I mean cars. Hella nuce scenery though!

Based on some of the suggestions, I was thinking this:

Enter AZ at Needles, take I-40 east to US-93, take US-93 to Phoenix, stay there for the night, then continue on US-60 east to Globe and then US-70 east all the way to NM.

It looks like that route will cut through some of the mountains, but nothing like US-60 from Globe to Show Low or US-191 up to Alpine.
