Flagstaff can grow into a larger city, look at all the land southeast of Humphreys Peak, it's fairly flat. Winona and the land around Twin Arrows casino has potential for new development.

You mean Coconino National Forest land? Or the Hopi Reservation?

On the Hopi Reservation, developers can purchase the land and build homes.

They don't have enough water in Flag for it to become a giant city.

The Hopi Reservation is not going to sell their land to home developers (if they even could). They already spend countless resources fighting Navajo Nation for land and water.

Also unless the residents are members of that tribe, none of them would be able to own their house, they'd only be able to lease or rent. If they wanted to own a place in that area they'd have to look on non-tribal land.

Build a d@mn reservoir. Flagg gets just about as much rain as anyplace in AZ.

I have a friend who's lived in Flagg for the past 8 years, and he constantly rants about how anti-growth the place is. And with the amount of people wanting to live there to escape the heat, it's a veritable sh1tshow, San Diego style - ridiculous rents and crappy jobs.

Much easier to just stick your head in the freezer if it's too damn hot.

A reservoir to what? Just out on the land and fill it with a hose?

It's anti growth because it's desirable, lacks water, and the land is heavily restricted. The real option is up, but that's not why people move there.

Building vertically only encourages to raise prices of housing while restricting supply and increasing demand. Artificially restricting housing via NIMBYs doesn't make a place desirable, it just makes it more expensive. How is that a good thing? The winter weather in Coconino county isn't all that cracked up to be.

What another poster suggests is build more reservoirs, buy some of the land from the Hopi reservation and build thousands of homes. That will increase supply and bring prices down.
