Hi guys,

I hadn't been to Arizona before, but a friend of mine and I just did a climb on Humphrey's peak.

Didn't get much of a kick out of Flagstaff, but got a real kick out of Arizona in general. Awesome state and breathtaking scenery.

I wrote a blog about it here: Blog

One question I wanted to ask veterans of Arizona hiking is, is there a good time to snow climb Humphrey's? It may be something we want to go back to in the winter! It was awesome in the summer, but it was hard going due to the rocks and roots!

Thanks,

B.

Probably April, the snow sticks up there until early June

Thanks. Is it snow-show territory or is it normally fairly well packed snow?

The snow up there is fairly fluffy, due to the low overall moisture, so don't know about snow shoes, as those are more for level ground, but whatever boots they use to hike K2 or Everest would be good

Below is a link with some information on it. You need a hiking permit if you plan to hike it in the winter.

I used to be the gear rental manager for a local hiking store. We rented 5-6 pairs of snow shoes a weekend for people going up Humphrey's in the winter. Plus keep an eye on the weather, it gets really windy up there. Had one guy that was an experienced mountain climber who was 6'3" and 230 lbs get literally blown off the ridgeline while approaching the summit last year due to 50+ MPH winds.

Flagstaff manages to snow up into May (that's Flagstaff, not even Humphreys) but I'd probably do early spring if that was my kinda thing. Early spring seems like a more reliable time.

I hiked it in Aug '74. Totally unprepared, not enough water, not acclimated. Stumbling back across the ridge between Humphreys and Agassiz I thought I saw little white midges flying over the ridge. They were rising as they passed me. It was snowing.

Did the climber survive, or was it a grim 666 scenario?

He survived, it wasn't that big of a deal. But simply to show how strong the winds up there are. This guy simply couldn't put one foot in front of the other due to the high winds.

Humphrey's creates it own weather and you just need to keep an eye on it. The next weekend had perfect weather and this guy I mentioned summited easily.
