I see on the caltrans site there is some construction just over the Border West of Yuma until Imperial and I wasn't sure what the delay might be like and if it might be better to take the 10 instead?

I haven't driven that route since October, but they've been having roadwork on the 8 in that section for over a year now. The delay was never more than 20 minutes before and I can't imagine it's much worse than that now. Definitely not bad enough to have to take the 10.

I drove I-8 in late November from San Diego to AZ. I had no delay other than slowing down to the posted speed limit in the 10 to 15 mile long construction zone. There was so little traffic along I-8 that is is really no big deal. Do not speed through the construction zone because CHP will be happy to write a big fat speeding ticket.

Cal Trans is going all out in the I-8 rebuild from El Centro to Yuma. They are not just patching potholes or filling in a few rough sections. They are tearing out the roadway down to bare ground, setting a new base with steel rebar grid and pouring a beautiful new cement highway. When you drive along the new sections of I-8 it feels like driving along smooth rails.

I-8 is a relaxing trip compared with bumper-to-bumper traffic along most of I-10. Toss in an endless line of semi-trucks in the right lane of I-10, and it seals the deal for making I-8 the best choice for going to San Diego or southern Orange County.

I just got back from scenic drives to and from San Diego. Via Palm Desert and Temecula heading there. Via Julian and Salton Sea on the way back. Recommended.

Yes, people definitely need to see the Salton Sea before it dries up and becomes a giant sized Owens Lake-style disaster. There are some nice side routes from Julian to the 10 - one through Borrego Springs and another through Box Canyon. Some of the most scenic desert areas in the world.

Where do you guys stay when you go to San Diego? I love Coronado but...well, you know.

I used to stay in a hotel in Old Town but it has an underground parking garage and my vehicle won't fit.

Leads to RV parks also appreciated.

I stay cheaply in Imperial Beach. A close drive to the beach, always parking, never crowded.

We drove over on Saturday from Avondale. Took 85 to I-8. Ran into a little traffic in El Cajon, but once on the 125 north to I-15, and west on 78, we encountered very little traffic. I was very surprised.
We stayed at the Homewood Suites in Carlsbad, next to Palomar Airport. Nice hotel, good value, but not on the coast. We stayed there because of the proximity to our daughter's homes. After staying there for 2 nights, we are now in Vista, with our oldest daughter.
On our return, we'll take I-15 north to Temecula, across to Hemet, and Beaumont, then I-10 east to Phoenix.
