Little strange. The mayor, city manager and economic development employees pump out a lot of press releases for stuff like this. A lot of it is just employment justification.

The article really isn't clear. It states that 63,000 left the country for medical care.

The number fluctuates between 42,000 and this new number of 63,000. Why does it fluctuate? Well the number is given out by the Fraser Institute, a Koch Bros funded right wing think tank. They don't actually KNOW how many people get care out of the US, they ask the doctors to guess. That's right, guess.

"The Fraser Institute draws its estimates from an annual survey of medical specialists about wait times. The survey includes one question about medical tourism: "Approximately what percentage of your patients received non-emergency medical treatment in the past 12 months outside Canada?"

About 20 per cent of the 11,292 specialists the the Fraser Institute contacted responded to the most recent survey.
"

So the town is dealing with flawed data. The percentage of Canadians leaving Canada for elective surgeries is so small as to be insignificant. The amount that might be in this towns area, even smaller.

These people would also not be able to get insurance for this, they must pay out of pocket. Trust me, most would wait IF there is a wait list and get it done for no cost.

So the town is putting false hopes into the big lie that Canadians are flocking to the US for care.

If you listen to the interview you find that this is mostly hypothetical, a proposal. But what I find most interesting is that there are no major hospitals in Surprise. The nearest major hospitals are in Sun City, Sun City West, and Goodyear.

Why any Canadian would go to Surprise to have a knee replaced, to the tune of about $50K, when they can have done for free in Canada makes no sense.

Do Canadians seek healthcare in Surprise? Probably, when they stub their toe or need antibiotics. Will they go there for major surgeries? Seems like a pipe dream.

Like I said above, Director of Econ Development has to try and justify her $150k salary.

I think a more logical tactic would be to first market to snowbirds as a winter destination, then while they're here they can get whatever medical care they need (whether urgent or planned) from local providers. The hospital I used to work at in Palm Springs is doing just that.
