Wait what, Cinco de Mayo isn't Mexican St. Patrick's Day!

Actually, Cinco de Mayo is important to the four Southwestern states because so many of their residents participated in the fighting against Maximillion. San Antonio and El Paso were staging places for Mexicans in exile planning battle; along with the U.S. government exercising its interests (the Monroe Doctrine) in ousting the Austrian/French from Mexico.

A little known fact is that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York.

The ship hit an iceberg and sank and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5 and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

WHY does America (including we in Arizona) seem to prefer Cinco de Mayo instead?

Mexico does NOT really "celebrate" Cinco de Mayo, except as a time to commemorate a successful battle over Napoleon's French army on that particular day in 1862.

Somehow, Americans/Arizonans continue to grab a hold of the 5th of May annually -- complete with parades, Mexican food, Margaritas & beer!

Note: Lately, we've also been "celebrating" the 4th of May: May the 4th be with You!

Thoughts?

Who freaking cares? We just came for the tacos.

Sometimes we want to get drunk off of overpriced margaritas, just let us live.

It is actually 3 members of our extended family's birthdays so...we still had a BBQ. I wanted to do Carne Asada but was over-ruled in favor of burgers/brauts/dogs.

Yes, that is the mindset here in the southwest. I grew up in Arizona and am Native American.
I noticed the Mexican Americans (people who are of Mexican ethnicity but are born and raised in America)
celebrate Cinco De Mayo. By contrast, the pure Mexican citizens of places like Oxuaca, Vera Cruz, or
Mexico City do not celebrate Cinco De Mayo. It's an irony. The food we consider "Mexican" food is not
considered authentic by people who are actually from Mexico. It's a cultural contrast. The date itself
marked a victory by Mexico against France. Most people probably never heard about it.

I was never really aware that France was once at war with Mexico until I saw "The Undefeated" by
John Wayne. His film was about a renegade Confederate family that fled to Mexico after losing the
Civil War. But France was briefly mentioned without details in the movie plot. Other than that, it never
got any mention in any history class I can recall in high school or college.

Most people in AZ don't seem to care about the historical roots and just "celebrate" the day - lol.
