Well said by all. I think personal accountability, preparation and self reliance are good traits.

Everything in the desert has freakin spines. I come back from hunting and it looks like I got attacked by a bunch of Javelina. Kicked a barrel cactus and spine stayed underneath my toenail for 2 years. Went right through my boots. I can't imagine flops vs barrel cactus.

Funny as heck. The sign clearly states no flip-flops. The girl was wearing basically flip-flops. How the heck is that 'shaming'. It is only pointing out that the girl quite obviously did not care what the warning were. And paid for it, or should with $$$$.

Oh there are people on the Interwebs trying to justify hiking in sandals though..."The Romans and Greeks did it" "There are whole tribes in Africa that do it"...seriously there is no way of justifying wearing a pair of cheap Target sandals on a 10 mile hike in the desert. They had to wrap tape around her foot to give her traction on the hike back up.

Stupid Hiker Law needs to be a thing.

Stupid Hiker Law needs to be a thing.

Especially with the influx of people leaving high-tax states, who probably have no familiarity with the desert whatsoever. Rescuers shouldn't have to risk their own lives bailing out fools.

OK, I'm in. How do we get it done?

Make stupid choices, live w/ bad consequences. I say if they get injured badly and need assistance, just leave them there to die without having to resort to taxpayer funds. Survival of the fittest is where this should lead to.

I recall a couple 19 and 16, got their truck stuck in the sand, used all their energy to try and dig out, before dying of hyperthermia. They were one mile from I40.

Bottom Line . . .

Do something STUPID and you should expect to be the recipient of "shaming" plus . . .

Whatever happened to Logic and Common Sense?
