A 16-year-old died on a Boy Scout hike in Arizona after the group ran out of water. The group hiked the 1,500-foot Picacho Peak last Saturday, officials said, and drank the last of its water at the top, the Arizona Republic reports.

The boy reportedly showed signs of dehydration on the way down from the mountain. Emergency responders were called but were unable to revive the teenager, whose name was not released.

At the time, the temperature was above 90 degrees.

A Pinal County sheriff's spokeswoman said Friday that the death is being investigated, per the Daily Star, but charges aren’t expected.

The group included two adults. "We offer our sincerest condolences to his family, and we will support them in any way that we can," said Andy Price, chief executive of the local scouting organization, adding, "This is a very difficult time for our Scouting family." (Dehydration can affect cognitive function.)

I saw that story. It's incredibly sad. Such an avoidable death.

There is something missing in the story. I've been on that trail a number of times. While it's steep, it's not that long of a trail and help from the park rangers isn't more than a 15-20 minute hike if pressed for time.

Wondering if the scout had some other unknown health issue beforehand.

That is a serious, serious mistake for anyone to not be well prepared with water for hydration while hiking or on camping trips. Sounds like lack of experience....on the BS.

The boy's parents issued a statement through the Boy Scouts saying the Boy Scouts were fully prepared for the hike.

And yet the sheriff's office says he showed signs of "extreme dehydration."

The boy must've been sick. He might've had diabetes and/or asthma. Or something. That hike shouldn't have killed a young boy like that.

There's nothing missing. The poor kid simply didn't have enough water.

As hiking trails go Picacho is not very long despite a few steeper spots here and there. But it is only a four mile round trip. I think that is what is mysterious.
