I'm planning on moving to AZ in 2021. I’m trying to understand the VLT in Arizona, and do a rough estimate for registering a used car. The MDV website says: “…The VLT is based on an assessed value of 60% of the manufacturer's base retail price (MBRP) reduced by 16.25% for each year since the vehicle was first registered in Arizona." "The rate is calculated as $2.80 (new vehicles)/$2.89 (used vehicles) for each $100 of the assessed value."

So, bringing in a 17 year-old car (Navigator), with a manufacturer's base retail price of $50,000, would result in an assessed value of $30,000. According to the website, I would pay $2.89 for each $100 of assessed value, for a VLT total of $867….for a 17 year-old car worth approx $5K.

Similarly, I bought a 2002 Aston Martin in 2015 for $50K - based on the formula: 60% of $228K (2002 MBRP), the assessed value is $136,800 (for a car worth only $40K today). *So, I figure 2.9% of that assessed value is $3,953 for the first year registration (compared to CA which my registration is approx $450). I pray I’m misunderstanding the, hopefully just poorly worded, formula on their website. Any experienced replies will be much appreciated. Thank you.

I`m not sure about the 60% part but if they went with the 50k as new your 1st year tax on the Lincoln would now be around 87.00. They value it around 2911. not what you paid 17 years ago.

1998 Jeep cherokee cost me 105 for 5 years
2005 Yamaha V star cost 105 for 5 years
2006 Honda VTX 1800 was 105 for 5 years
1998 Dodge 2500 was 105 for 5 years

They do 1, 3 and 5 year registrations. The 5 year being the cheapest in the long run.

Both the Husband and I have CDL A with Motorcycle....under 100 each.

Copy all...so it's a mis-type in their explanation(?)...which says first year registered in AZ, but should read first year registered (period), in my case 2003 and 2002, not 2021...yes?

A 17 year old car that started at 30k would now be valued at 2100. X 2.89 rounds out at 61.00 for your first year. Are you using .1625 or 16.25?

1625 is not the concern, rather...the main clarification I needed was if I bring a 2002 car to AZ, is the initial reg value (60% 0f MBRP) based on when it came to AZ in 2021, or the first year registered in any State., such as 2002 in my case.

Again, the website is worded: "first registered in Arizona" So my 55K car in 2002, is first registered in AZ in 2021, the way it is worded, the value will be based on initial value (55K in 2002) beginning in 2021 not 2002. I just surmise this is not the case.

Hope I explained my specific concern ok...

Don't know where you're coming from, but our vehicles were about 1/3 of what it cost in Cali...2011 Chevy Truck was $160...

'Taxifornia' also, Woody...lol. I'm just gonna go with the first year of registration in any state to determine value, rather than first year in AZ.

What they mean is if it`s first registered here in AZ. Like the the first place it gets registered. In any case it should be reasonable. Like the other poster said I get the 5 year tags.
