The Rise of Arizona (Phoenix: real estate, houses, buy)

This mini documentary just came out yesterday from CNBC about the current boom going on in Arizona. It covers the general growth/technology growth within the state and the Phoenix Metro. It covers the good and bad challenges, but pretty interesting.

Most of us paying attention to what's going on in the state already know most of what is covered, but if you've been hiding out under a rock, or similarly, hanging out on City-Data forums too much .. it could be pretty enlightening.

The fact that they are building an endless sea of data centers (which require 24/7 cooling) in the middle of a scorching hot desert says everything you need to know about how out of whack our priorities are. Arizona is basically saying hey, here’s a bunch of free money/tax breaks to be wasteful, negligent, and worsen our sustainability issues.

Meanwhile, officials are becoming increasingly alarmed about the water situation and are, for the first time, talking very seriously about shortages and forced restrictions. But that’s no reason to slow growth. Why worry about the state of the environment or our quality of life in 10 years when there is money to be made today.

I'd rather see a data center built then another golf course. Just saying.

Oh wow.

Based on your response to the video I came to four conclusions:

a) You watched only the first 30 seconds of the 20min video.
b) You watched 50% of the video, but paid attention to only 25% of what you watched.
c) You watched all of it, but muted the audio.
d) You watched all of it and failed to comprehend any of it.

One data center (Apple) was briefly talked about in the beginning. 98% of the companies referenced in the video had nothing to do with data centers. These were semi conducter manufacturers, electric car manufacturers, self-driving car companies, aerospace manufacturers, and numerous misc technology companies (Zoom, Infosys, BlueYonder, Benchmark electronics ....).

The semi conductor manufacturer water usage was discussed in the video. Much of the water used is reclaimed.

Arizona is also ranked as having the second most reliable power grid in the US, which is very important to many of these highly technical manufacturing companies.

Intel, TSMC, and potentially Samsung are going to bring thousands of high paying technical jobs here and make the state possibly the largest core hub of semi conductor manufacturing companies in the US. This has the potential to bring in many more tech companies. It spurs growth and attracts companies that what to be closely tied to the chip manufacturers .. and of course creates high paying jobs.

This is simply fantastic news for Arizona. It doesn't mean we are simply ignoring the environment.

I've been hearing and reading this kind of stuff for 40 years. Nothing ever comes of it. The companies buy up real estate, get subsidies, can't find capital, fold, sell the real estate and pocket the subsidies. We are what we are and that is a hot and barren place with benign weather, great transportation and a poor image of "Mississippi West". That means more warehouses and more data centers while the HQs go to Austin.

None of this is about warehouses and data centers. Semi conductor manufacturing already exists in the Valley, so does aerospace engineering and manufacturing, electric car manufacturing has already begun, and yes, many technology companies have already moved here.

Most of what is being discussed in the video exists and is functioning as business in the Valley today. There is just a continuing and growing expansion of it all on a pretty large scale.

I group myself into this, but .. remember it's ok City-Data people .. it's ok to go outside and experience reality.

Don't JUST "read" and "hear" about things for 40yrs.

Go outside .. see it for yourself. The Phoenix Metro area really is growing up. Life is going on out there ... now get out there, get away from that keyboard and/or phone.

It's good news that Arizona is being showcased nationally in a positive way. I would like to see us become more than just a tech hub, however. Major financial centers, manufacturing, and other types of companies are headquartered in the large Texas cities. It's all part of a robust, diversified economy, which is what Arizona needs to become more aggressive on (specifically in the Phoenix metro).

Apple offsets 100% of their energy use with renewable energy.
