What are you looking for? Small town or city? In the desert or in the mountains? Schools, shopping, etc. Tell us what's important to you, and then we can offer some suggestions.

What cities do you consider being in the mountains, I am planning on moving to the area this summer and I am also lost to what neighboorhoods I should be looking in. I heard that the Arrowhead area is quite nice how are the middle and high schools in that area, is there a community college nearby.

There are so many choices and variations here in AZ. Arrowhead is part of Phoenix metro area. Since freyfamily had posted in the "Arizona" section (vs the "Phoenix" section) I was thinking they were looking for a town outside of Phoenix.

Mountain towns to me include Flagstaff, Payson, Prescott, Showlow, and a few others, depending on one's definition of "mountains". But down there in Phoenix as areas that are close to Camelback, Squaw Peak, and other mountains. Fountain Hills sits pretty high, too. Arrowhead are of Phoenix is in the northwest valley and seems pretty flat to me.

I agree with you for the most part Gretchen.

Irvinedebs, to see the Phoenix "mountains", google a map of Phoenix and click on "terrain". Here's a link: phoenix, az - Google Maps

You'll see that the Phoenix area is surrounded by mountains with some in the interior near Paradise Valley and the 51 as well as the Fountain Hills area. A few examples of Phoenix area developments that are built next to and into the surrounding mountains are Anthem, Verrado, Estrella, Vistancia, and Arrowhead. Arrowhead is a large development that goes from flat (below the 101) to the mountainous area (above the 101). Actually one could say the same of any mountain town that towns are built in the valley surrounded by the mountains. The Phoenix area valley is just larger than the valley in Flagstaff, Prescott, etc. Also, Phoenix is at a lower overall elevation than the other "mountain" cities.
