Is it okay to use a Prius to visit, hike north Grand Canyon rim, Vermillion Cliffs, or is itbest to bring a car with more ground clearance? Prius was not a good choice in Sedona in a couple spots

Actually did a trip in that area in my friend's Prius, never again. A lot of steep, mountainous roads and the Prius just didn't have the power. Made for some extra long days in the car in between stops.

I suggest a muscle car like a Mustang GT, something fun and lower center of gravity.

Is it ever ok to use a Prius? I'm all for electric and new technologies, but that has got to be one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen.

If you're going off-road you need something better. A friend of mine was towing a trailer and broke the axle and had to drag it out until he could get a cell phone signal.

Have you done any advance reading about the places you want to visit? Depending on what land management agency administers those sites you can probably get some travel details like road conditions from them. Google them too and pull up maps of the routes that reach them. You can learn quite a bit from a map using the legend for the class of road (maintained highway, unmaintained soft surface road, etc) to those destinations. AAA can provide info as well. Are you renting the car? If so, you may be able to get some info from the agent. If in doubt, don't rent such a low slung car. There are options. Better to rent something a little more capable and reach the places you want to visit than find out you can't.

Google maps allows you to literally see most of the roads -- even the dirt roads -- in most areas. Pretty good detail.
