License-plate frames that celebrate your favorite college or sports team become illegal next month if the frame obscures the state's name.

Starting Jan. 1, police can stop you if "Arizona" isn't clearly visible at the top of the plate. Violators will be fined an average of $135, plus court fees, depending on the city where the violation is discovered.

Law targets license-plate frames that obscure 'Arizona'

I don't have a problem with this.

What I have a problem with is that it leaves it up to someone (and officer, car owner, the Judge....) to determine what's "obscured" or to what degree it's readable. THAT'S a bs law.

If your going to push for the law make it clear: No frames or coverings of any type over a plate. Makes it a bit easier to understand.

I agree. Get rid of all frames and make it easier for Arizona law enforcement to do their job.

Excellent point, Todd . . . that's probably next.

Since becoming aware of this new law, I am amazed at how many "obscured" and/or covered plates are out there.

That's exactly what they don't want you to do. If everyone got rid of the frames, LEO's would have one less tool to use for pulling people over. These laws are nothing but extra reasons for cops to use to pull people over, who have otherwise done nothing wrong, but whom the cops want to stop. When's the last time a cop couldn't stop someone or call in his plate once stopped because he didn't know what state the car was registered in? GMAFB.

I hear you. However, there are a percentage of drivers out there, including the criminal element, which will do whatever they can to hide their plates for reasons known only to them. I prefer we err to the side of law enforcement, than to the other side.

Since they don't seem to be doing very much about the people who obstruct the actual plate itself (with the reflective wax or complete license plate covers (tinted, polarized), etc.), what makes us think they will do anything about a partially covered "Arizona"?
