PHOENIX - A major abortion bill is advancing at the Arizona Legislature in a new political environment that could provide social conservatives with their first big state-level win on the divisive issue after years of losses due to vetoes.

The legislation would require a pre-abortion waiting period and mandatory disclosures to women seeking abortions. It also would allow pharmacists and health care providers to refuse to participate in abortion or emergency contraception on moral grounds. Other provisions toughen the existing law on parental rights.

It's about time the people got to vote on this. Letting nine judges decide for us didn't settle anything.

Just what I need, some religious wacko pharmacist deciding his religion knows what's best for my health. If you don't want to do the job, get out of the field.

AMEN to that, nickw!

The audacity of some people feeling their standards are the only standards.

It would be fine if the people had a chance to vote on the issue ... but this bill won't allow a public vote because it's being drafted in the Legislature. If it passes there, it goes to Brewer's desk. If she signs it, it becomes law. Believe me, I'll be mad if Brewer signs this piece of garbage. I thought having a more conservative Legislature & Governor would have meant cutting the fat from the budget & reducing the size of government. Apparently, the "neo con" mentality is get the government off our backs, except when it comes to personal choice. ABSURD!!!

Agree 100%! One thing about Arizona I've always admired is our free Libertarian spirit. I don't want this place to start behaving like the damn Bible Belt!

Pretty soon we'll be going after liquor stores and pig farmers for not hiring Muslims who refuse to handle their products as part of the job.

Abortion is a womans right, and should be the womans choice, not the states.

First off, there is already case law regarding the issue of a person of the Muslim faith refusing to handle pork products (even bagging them in the grocery store) because of their religious belief.

A number of States have made provisions for Pharmacists refusing to fill certain types of Prescriptions because of religious objections. BTW, there is no requirement that every pharmacy carry every medication on the market.

And, re this legislation; Abortion on demand, especially used as a method of birth control is what precipitated the "cooling off" period contained in the legislation (not yet passed). In other words, it would create a period of time to allow the female to think it over to make absolutely sure this is what she wanted. As for the option counseling - there was an example of this just the other day at UofA in Tucson: A Sophomore had a child in her dorm room - then tried to kill the baby. The baby is currently in critical condition and the female is in jail. Had she had the counseling, she would have at least known some options like, if she took the baby to a fire station or hospital - she could have left the baby there with no repercussions on her. Now, she will spend time in jail.

As I'm sure you know the Bible like you know the back of your hand, doesn't the Bible also indicate that there are temptations and sins in society which we must not adhere to? If you don't believe in abortion, fine ... but why should laws be passed restricting, controlling, or banning the practice? If you believe in the scriptures, then encourage people to do what is Biblicly correct through your teachings. Personal opinions and moral objections should NEVER be enacted into law.

I will be highly disgusted if this nonsense is signed by Governor Brewer ... especially considering that the state has much more pressing issues to resolve, such as the budget. Furthermore, the issue of abortion (being the hot topic which it is) should always be decided by a majority public vote ... not by a band of self righteous politicians!
