Well, best of luck! Ive been there before, wasnt too crazy about it though. I have a cousin at the USMC station there also.

After receiving a job offer in Yuma I started doing some research on the small town. But that's about all I have come up with so far - - is that it's a small town, and can get terribly hot in the summer months.

If ANYONE has ANY information on this area of Arizona, my husband and I would greatly appreciate it and any feedback. I am interested in the schools, so anyone with first hand information regarding their experiences with any elementary schools in the area would be great. Some other points that I'd like to find out about Yuma:

Is there any pest control issues (bugs and such)??
Is the housing market great for home buyers at this time/is there many apartment options out there?
Is there much for a young family to do in Yuma, or must we drive forever to find something (we have a 3yr. old)?
Is there much work out that way - or do the majority of people drive over 40min to work?

Thanks for any feeback!
Pest control issues?not really.Depends where you live though. If you live close to the open desert, you can expect to see scorpions and stuff.
We dont live there, and the worst Ive seen is spiders. But not too many.

Housing market is decent right now,if you want ideas let me know,I know some areas that are really nice and quiet.

Much to do with a 3y/o?depends on what you are talking about. If you mean chucky cheese or piter pipper pizza then you are ok.
If you mean disneyland,then yeah.Thats a 3 1/2 hour drive.
San Diego Sea World is 2 1/2 same with the Zoo,lego land or Knotts berry farm.
We moved here when our daughter was 4,and she has not had a shortage of things to do.

Commute should take you 20 minutes at the most,it takes me 4 minutes.and my wife 15 minutes

Can you believe Yuma was #1 in growth per capita a few years ago? That does not include the illegals pouring in.

"1 Yuma, Arizona
Once a small farming community, this border town is one of the nation's fastest-growing areas, with a burgeoning Latino population and a steady stream of Californians in search of a lower cost of living. Surging trade with Mexico has sparked strong growth in services and transportation.

Overall Rank 1 | 1-Year Job Growth 8.3% | 5-Year Job Growth 32.0% | Index Score 100.0"

With respect to the housing market, Yuma is still correcting from the extreme upswing in 04-05. It all depends where you buy and what you are willing to spend. Some neighborhoods are safe, some are not. It is a smart buyers market by far in Yuma. If you are smart with what you buy, you will be fine and likely make a profit long term. If you are ignorant and just go buy a house without doing research, you will pay if you intend to sell in the near future.

I cant say much about Yuma as I live in Phoenix, except that I have driven through it! And it will be a HUGE change from MI (lived there a good part of my life). Where in MI are you from? I have many friends who are teachers here in the valley. If you ever plan on moving to the Phoenix area I would be able to help much more! But I wouldnt suggest moving to yuma...maybe a personal opinion, but PHX is much better! Job market, living, AND LOTS of things for a three year old to do

MAB-
thanks so much! I went back on Memorial weekend, and have met some neighbors and husband's co-workers. Most of the people I have met are not originally from the Yuma or Az areas...lol. Anyway, I like Yuma so far. We are leaving next week and following the moving truck. dh took me by the "dunes", and I have to admit, it looks like fun......well......it looks like fun as long as I am the one doing the watching and someone else is doing the dune bugging..lol. Anway, I may take you up on that offer....RWF1

Smile Yuma, Arizona

Zilk3... If you are still looking for input on Yuma let me know. I moved from Westland, Michigan in the 80's. I am very pro on Az and Yuma. I happen to be one of those who loves the heat. I would be glad to provide more info for you. I have school age children and am very familiar with the schools. I have found there are three types of people in Yuma... 1) Those who love it!! 2) Those who hate it. and 3) Those who don't know any better.
Compared with Michigan, housing prices are very reasonable.
Today I paid $2.89 a gallon for gas.

AWESOME.
RWF! actually riding the buggies is more fun than watching.

Also Mexico has great dentists(I have a friend who is a dentist in Los Algodones),great chinese food and of coure the wonderful beaches of Ensenada are only 4 hours away.
Let me tell you,in mid July when weather is 114 in Yuma,it is 79 in Ensenada or the San Diego Coastal area.
So weekend getaways are nice.
and after the summer, theres plenty of places to explore around Yuma.
ok,RWF1 keep me informed,take care.
