Hi all,

I've read a few other threads about Kingman and a lot of the feedback seems geared more towards questions from couples/retirees. So, I have to ask what you all think life might be like for a 25 year old, single, female, master's educated professional with a potential job over at the regional medical center. Are there many young people around town or in the surrounding areas?

I currently live and work in Boston, MA and have been here my entire life. Let's just say the growing disrepect amongst us Ma$$holes and the winters are taking their respective tolls. PLUS, I have a 350 Z that I only get to drive a few months out of the year

The outdoor life seems very attractive and I'm into hiking/biking/ATVing and even shooting ranges. I wouldn't say I enjoy dance clubs but are there any watering holes where the young people congregate? Or gyms? Or even activity groups? Boston is a pretty busy place and I know there would be an adjustment.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Hi Slinkybee23,

I'm an ex-Bostonian myself.

Single life would be interesting here for a gal like you. First the good news. The ATV/hiking/biking/shooting-range scene you'd be quite happy with. Watering holes I'm not so sure of. There are a couple of restaurant bars which seem pretty active. Plus a couple of dives as well. (I have a family, so those days are behind me.) There are a couple of gyms where I'm pretty certain several romances in town have been kindled, and possibly a few marriages broken as well. The gym at KRMC is an excellent facility with an Olympic sized pool, and is very popular. Take one of the hard-core fitness classes there and you'll be surrounded by many young athletic folks in town. The outdoor activities would probably make you pretty popular with the guys.

For the bad news, this ain't exactly yuppie central. There are a LOT of medical professionals here, and I get the impression it's a bit of a Peyton Place. Outside of medical, there are a few industries and white collar businesses, but mostly it's a blue collar town. There is a community college, but I wouldn't call this a college town either. There are a few neighboring towns like Bullhead, Laughlin, and Lake Havasu to explore. Plus Las Vegas is 90 minutes away (or will be in a few months when they finish the new bridge over the Hoover Dam.)

Honestly, from a purely selfish point of view, we need more folks like you, and I hope you come. But, I don't want to paint an overly optimistic picture of the town either. Bottom line is this is a great place to raise a family. But, I'm not entirely certain how you'd find the singles-scene, especially coming from Boston.

Please feel free to pose any other questions you have in this thread or send me a PM if you like.

Thank you so so much for the feedback! I actually asked the hiring manager if she could coordinate a few calls with some of the younger people in the office over the next few days. I'm leaning towards coming out for a visit after reading this thread. We'll see what the calls bring.

One of the first things I thought about Kingman was that it would be a great place to raise a family. Just need the necessary parts for that to happen.

kdog, the people must be so much friendlier out there than in Boston....right? Please tell me yes. Also, are there any Costcos or Sam's Clubs around there? Dunkin Donuts? I saw the mention of a Wal-Mart.

Sams Club in Bullhead City (45-50 miles away), Super WM in Kingman. Note that Las Vegas will be less than 2 hours away once the Hoover Dam bypass is completed.

Kingman despite its warts; is significantly friendler than Boston IMHO.

Needless to say: do yourself a favor and explore Bullhead as well as Lake Havasu City while visiting Kingman.

Yeah, I brought my own.

Definitely. Boston people are all grouchy and suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Kingman people are an eclectic mix of people from CA, the midwest, east coast, and a few native desert rats. Somehow, everyone has figured out how to get along, I think mostly by being nice. 300 days of sunshine probably helps too.

Slight correct on AZBear's post, Sam's Club is actually 33 miles away according to Google Maps. Lake Havasu is a great place to visit, but I don't think you'd want to live there, as you'd be over an hour from work. You're far better off living in Kingman than Bullhead, IMHO. No Dunkin Donuts here, but there are other donut places. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've ever seen a Dunkin Donuts in AZ. We do have a Starbucks though. Oh, and can't forget the In & Out Burger.

Another thing you'll like is little or no traffic. You can drive clear across town any time of the day in 10 minutes or so.
