I'm basically liberal and I think the anti-spanking people are off their rockers. Spanking works, especially in younger grades where there isn't as much machismo around.

Is this a law? How well is it accepted? Any reports on abuse? How do you opt out? Lots of questions.
I don't believe it's a law. I believe it's just custom. It depends on the school. All schools have an out if you don't want your kids paddled. As far as abuse is concerned I'm unaware of any.

I'm a teacher here in arkansas. I've spanked children in school before. Yes, some children do respond to it, others don't. Having said all that I'll never spank a child again. I found it distasteful and it seems like a sure way to get sued.

For the record, if anybody spanked or hit my kid-for any reason other than me-they would have serious issues.

I did not respond to spankings. I would have rather had a spanking than stand in a corner or stay after school. Having said that, I would never let a teacher spank my child. I would certainly file suit, although I doubt that anyone would actually spank my child.

of course they wouldn't, he is an angel right? I am only kidding. I never had one of my kids spanked in school (I am sure my son could have used a few) so I do not know how i would respond; a low suit? NO

No, he is no angel. He is well behaved for his age. Every now and then he will get a spanking, but it is rare and with restraint.
I do not trust anyone to use the same restraint. I will be the one who does it, if it needs to be done.
He will not likely get a spanking in school because the school officials know me professionally, and would not like appearing in court against me.

Having said that, I believe in school discipline, and if my child got in trouble at school, it would be double when he got home. I understand that some parents are not as hands on and that makes it harder for the schools. They have a real tough job with disruptive students, and my hat goes off to them for having the patience to deal with them.

We had a friend in NM that was a retired teacher. Just before she retired she had a kid in her class and it was only 3rd grade. She was disiplining him (certainly not spanking him, she was not the type) but she did make him stand in the corner and told him if he didn't straighten out she would send him to the principal. Guess what he said? You wouldn't dare, my dad is an attoney and he will sue you. Nice kid, huh?

I would spank my son for that.

They were still spanking kids in _high school_ in the little district that I went to back in the day. It's pure barbarism as far as I'm concerned. If I would've been threatened with it, I would've fought back and then would've sued everyone involved.

I think it's mostly gone in the bigger districts, thankfully. It's also wildly hypocritical for conservatives--supposed haters of government power--to support the state beating its citizens. And I say that as a centrist who supports a good many conservative policies.

Should be left up to the parents, so long as it doesn't cross over into outright abuse.
