I have been making contacts and trying to find out what needs to be done to get this matter on the November general election. We need 38% of registered voters to sign a petition (and the county clerk validate these signatures) to get the matter before a general election. [mod]solicitation of any kind is not permitted[/mod]

I hope you can get it done. I lived in Crawford County (Alma & Van Buren) for a long time. I always thought it should be wet. I don't think the voters will do it though. They are very conservative.

There are a few places that have been granted liquor licenses in the last few years, I've heard. Maybe it is getting better.

Crawford County is the most conservative county in the state, if not the nation. It makes Ft. Smith look liberal (if thats even possible). I can see Benton going wet, as it practically already is but I don't see Crawford going wet for at least another 20 years. Its been on the ballot before and its always overwhelmingly vetoed. A few years ago the Alma country club was trying to serve alcohol as a private club and people were up in arms about that.

Who 38% is a heck of a lot. I didn't realize it took that many signatures. Good luck.

I will sign. I live in Crawford County. The problem is not with the overwhelming conservative county. The problem is with the money interests. It is usually about the money. The Liquor stores over the county line are making a killing. They are the ones behind the measure to keep it dry.

our problem here in Benton County as well. I love our favorite store (in MO) but I also know, if the county goes wet, the owner would suffer big time as would the liquor stores in surrounding counties.

One of the things you should do is also sponsor a drive to make sure the registered voter rolls are clean. People who have moved or for other reasons are not validly registered inflate the number of people you need to sign the petition. And conservatives tend to be the driving force behind cleaning the registry, so you get them to do your work for you.

I find it telling about an area still having the wet/dry debate in 2011. Quite the anachronism.

Not in the South. Arkansas is not the only state with wet and dry counties. They're not at all unique in this.

I know that very well, having lived in Georgia for over a decade. That doesn't make "dry" or other blue laws any less of an anachronism.
