I think, (hope!) the rudeness was just a isolated coincidence. Many people in small Arkansas communities are kinda private, which could be interpreted as being rude. Also, in the past in that area, they have had unpleasant experiences with "hippies" moving in and upsetting the status-quo, so they may be waiting to see how you associate with them. I truly hope everything works out for you. One suggestion is the obvious; have the family you are visiting introduce you around so you can meet their friends. That should put you in a better situation. Good luck and please let us know how things work out for you.

ksn, maybe the heat has gotten to everyone. Where were you looking and visiting cause this doesn't sound like the AR most of us know. I am sorry you had a bad experience. Please keep us posted, there is never any excuse for rudeness but it does exist everywhere to some degree.

I got a house in Oppelo and will be moving in 2 weeks. the area i visited intially was the Morrilton-Conway-Russellville area. i figured the small town would have a closed-off feel, but i kinda got that vibe in Conway as well. i hope you are right and will realize that we arent here to intrude or change anything, just to live life as they are. and i didnt get the chance to visit Little Rock, but im sure it is completely different there. thanks.
p.s. i do love Petit Jean State Park though! its only a 5 minute drive from my new house :-D

I am surprised you had a bad experience in Conway/Russellville area but don't let a few jerks ruin your new experience. Keep us posted.

I currently live in a small town of about 1000 people in southwest Kansas, the nearest town to me is 20 miles away in Dodge City. I was raised in Texas so I'm no stranger to the south, but I AM a stranger to the deep south and the ways of the land/people. What do I need to know about people's attitudes, cost of living, job market, etc. I currently work for Kroger and i noticed Ark has some, so that may help.
Thanks for your info.
Northwest arkansas is more like ok and texas culture if we are speaking of native arkies. You don't get that "deep south" culture unless you go south and east of little rock. Ok, I just mapquested oppello. It's near morrilton. You'll find the natives quite friendly, outwardly, but they will be very clannish.
