I just found out that my fiance and his family (mother and cousin) are moving to Oppelo soon because of a terminally ill relative. I am following, but I am nervous because I don't know a thing about Arkansas. Any advice and info to ease the nerves of moving to a new state?
I currently live in a small town of about 1000 people in southwest Kansas, the nearest town to me is 20 miles away in Dodge City. I was raised in Texas so I'm no stranger to the south, but I AM a stranger to the deep south and the ways of the land/people. What do I need to know about people's attitudes, cost of living, job market, etc. I currently work for Kroger and i noticed Ark has some, so that may help.
Thanks for your info.

You do realize that Texas is further south than Arkansas, correct?

not the panhandle. I was raised in Lubbock. there are some southern traits there but mostly it just seems like every other metropolis.
and i realize the panhandle is basically horizontally equal, but what i mean is that the panhandle of texas seems less "southern" than small town kansas, which is further north. and kansans are less likely to say "yall", "fixin", and the like, all of which i still say.

When you compare the politics of both states, what's the difference?

Who knew the Texas Panhandle was so cosmopolitan??

Where is Oppelo? The fact that I have never heard of it is a fairly good indication that it is a small town. So the size should be similar to what you are used to seeing; however, the location will determine the demographics and terrain etc.

My point is that if you're familiar with the "ways of the land/people" of Texas, then I don't think Arkansas will be that foreign to you. Heck, I don't know that you'll find that much of a difference between small town Arkansas and small town Kansas. They're all pretty conservative.

kansas has alot of liberals too to even out the conservative feeling. we spawned fred phelps and his band of protestors, we spawned dr george teller, the abortionist...and although kansans are not proud of these factors, the conservatives tend to stay silent and ignore it rather than make a huge fuss

You don't think Arkansas has many liberals?
