My father has recently moved to Arkansas after being away for 55 years. We went to get his driver's license and auto tags at the DMV and I thought I'd pass this along:

If you are a wartime veteran the costs of both are truly negligible. I don't remember how much his 4 year DL was, I want to say $17. The auto tags? $13.75 for the first year, $3.75 every subsequent year. He got really nice plates that say Korean War Veteran and U.S. Army on them. You cannot have veteran tags AND handicapped, you have to pick one or the other (provided you have the proof for disabled to begin with), but this worked out to be the most economical.

There's an order this is done in if you're getting both the DL and tags - take your DD 214 with you as well that shows Honorable Discharge. Tag the car first, then get the driver's license. There's some sort of note they make on the DL that will also entitle you to some discounts at restaurants and hotels and some sort of notation that you are a veteran but you apparently have to have the tags first. We did it exactly backwards :-)

I think it's nice that Arkansas gives special notice to our veterans and cuts them some slack. I don't think the license fees are high anyway, but this is just a little lagniappe that I'm proud to see.

Salutes to all the veterans, both wartime and peacetime.

Thanks Sam. I knew about the Tags but didn't know about the DL. I'll shoot for that next time. They also have a special Tag for military retirees at the same price. I have a Retiree Tag on my truck and a Korea War Tag on my car. They also have special Tags for combat Vets who received the Purple Heart and other high level medals. Again, thanks Sam.

I'm sorry, I got my words mixed up. Happens regularly these days - I meant you could not have handicapped veteran tags...you know, like the handicapped with the wheelchair on them. You can choose between handicapped or veterans, but not both. Or DAV is another category. It wasn't pertinent to our situation and I didn't think to mention it. These are designated by the letters DV prior to a string of numbers. Sorry. Thanks, Slim, for picking up on that!
