I have applied for a job at North Central Unit prison in Calico Rock. I want to move there but I can't find much information online about the town. I need to know if there are good rentals (house or apartment). The school seems good. Is this a good place to live? Are there grocery stores and such? Thanks for any help.

Moderator cut: snip Does anyone on the board work at the prison or know someone who does? I'd like information on what it is like to work there. I have never worked at a prison. Thanks so much for any and all replys.

This is always my advice to anyone thinking of moving somewhere they've never been....get on Google maps and "drive" the streets on street view. You can also get on realtor.com or trulia.com or zillow.com (I mention all 3 because sometimes one will have something that the others don't) and look at houses for sale in the area. Look at the google street view of the houses, too, because that can be very revealing! Also keep in mind that the street view seems to be about 4-5 years old....but it still gives you a good idea of what to expect.

Calico Rock looks like a cute little town to me, but I absolutely love small towns. It has the river, a creek (with a nice walking track beside it, looks like), and very cute downtown (at least it did), lots of preserved old houses, rolling terrain with distant mountain views...but if you don't like small towns, forget it.

I would bet that there are not too many rentals to be had.

RogMar, bet you've been to Calico Rock.....what say ye?

I wasn't going to post again, but I'll do what I can to help the OP out.

Yep, I'm in Calico Rock on a regular basis. It is a small town, with enough to keep it interesting. It has a hospital/clinic, a Mennonite presense, grocery, a few restaurants, etc.

Old town Calico Rock still stands and is a ghost town with signs posted around explaining what the buildings were. It's worth seeing once.

It sits on the White River, and has incredible bluffs that you can see forever from.

It's a straight shot North to Mountain Home, a larger city, and very many retirees and tourists.

If you're going to work at a prison, North Central is where you want to be. Inmates have to work their way into North Central, and if they misbehave, their sent elsewhere. It has a canine unit that'sjust about the best in the south. They win all the competition, and are called on frequently by other departments.

North Central pays very well for the area, a lot of the C/O's are law enforcement officers who have left lower paying jobs to work at North Central.

There are rentals, but I haven't paid a lot of attention to them. I'd advise calling a realtor, and checking the local paper, the White River Current.

Good luck on that. I think you'll enjoy Calico Rock. It's small town country with civilization all around.

They're always on the lookout for guards, but I don't know about CNA's.

Call Pam Moser at the unit and ask.
